Finding ways to keep your children entertained outdoors and learning isn’t always the easiest task. This article has some great ideas which can help you do just that! Summer is a great time for students to get out into the playground and enjoy the sun. However, it can often be difficult to keep them outdoors while they are also learning.

How to Mix Learning and the Outdoors

If you are looking for ways to enjoy the summer outdoors with your youngster and also help them learn, below is a post from The Tutoring Center, Arlington with two great tips.

Start With a Writing Picnic

How well your student writes can determine a range of things throughout their life, whether it’s the success of a college application or trying to get their dream job. However, it can often be difficult to get children to not only practice their writing but also enjoy the activity. Start in the kitchen by packing everything that you will need for a successful day out at your local park or picnic spot. Once you have everything you need, throw in a couple of pads of paper, some pens, and also some colored pencils. Once you have all had a play on the equipment and enjoyed some food, take some time to get comfortable and start writing. When your youngster asks what they should write about, encourage them to write about absolutely anything they would like. This could include a diary entry about the day’s events or even a short story about characters they have created in their minds. If you want to make it a group activity, ask them to write the first one or two paragraphs before handing the pad over to you to add your own two paragraphs, and so on. Will this result in nothing more than a funny story? It sure will! Will it also help your student connect writing and laughter? Absolutely! In addition, this activity also gives you a great opportunity to identify any learning challenges your child is struggling with. For example, if you notice that your student struggles with sentence structure or spelling, then you can address it early on. If your student struggles with their writing, one-to-one tutoring can help. How About Reading?

It’s no surprise that children aren’t the biggest fans of reading. It may come as a surprise, however, that it isn’t because they don’t enjoy the activity but is mainly because their only exposure to reading involves textbooks. Break this connection by using a similar approach as mentioned above with a reading picnic. In addition to packing everything you will need for a successful day out, be sure to include a few little treats. Once you are ready, make a stop at your local bookstore or library and get two copies of a book your youngster chooses. Anything they like! Again, once you have all had a chance to play on the equipment, rest under a tree or in some shade and start reading. However, instead of just reading until you can’t read anymore and want to go home, stop after each of the chapters and take the time to enjoy a snack and chat about the book. Ask your child questions such as:
  • What has happened in the book so far?
  • Who is your favorite character?
  • Who is your least favorite character?
  • What do you think will happen in the next chapter?
  • What will happen at the end of the book?
Using the treats you packed, use these as rewards for whoever correctly predicts what will happen in the next chapter. Similar to the writing activity, not only will this help to build a positive connection between your student and reading, it also gives you the perfect opportunity to identify learning challenges, such as struggles to read common words.
